Wittmann wins Race 1 at Hockenheim, great comeback from Duval, 5th

Marco WIttmann (BMW) led all 34 laps of the first event of the 2019 season of the DTM, Saturday May 4 in Hockenheim (Germany). The 2014 and 2016 champion overcame difficult conditions on a drying track to maintain the pole position advantage.

However, the German driver did not have an easy time, since he had to defend his position against Mike Rockenfeller (Audi, 2nd), then René Rast (Audi, retirement). The latter was less than a second behind the leader when his RS5 DTM suffered mechanical damage on the 29th lap.

Robin Frijns (Audi) completes the podium. The Dutchman took advantage of Paul di Resta's troubles (Aston Martin), forced to abandon after brake problems. The Aston Martin Vantage also had a timid start, with the best place being ninth place for Daniel Juncadella. Jake Dennis finished 11th, Ferdinand Habsburg withdrew for technical reasons.

The best comeback of the race is the work of Loïc duval (Audi). The Frenchman, qualified in 12th place, collected the points for fifth place, by overtaking Sheldon van der Linde (BMW) at the last minute. The South African is also the best rookie of the day.
