The inevitable happened. Its promoter ITR in great difficulty to the point of having to close the door according to the German press, the DTM has a new buyer which should mark its definitive end. The German championship which adopted the GT3 regulations in 2021 was absorbed by the ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) this Friday, December 2.

« Thus, we are now laying the foundations for a long-term future for motorsport in the German-speaking world, explains DTM boss Gerhard Berger. For the huge DTM fan community, this is good news »

What was supposed to give new impetus after the end of Class-One at the end of 2020 ultimately did not help the DTM which notably suffered from the face-to-face with the ADAC GT Masters, the very tough German GT3 championship. It was even said that the understanding between the two parties was not good, particularly because of the ambitions of ITR which wanted to impose its championship as the GT3 reference on the other side of the Rhine.

« I have decided to transfer the DTM brand to ADAC, points out the Austrian. I am firmly convinced that the brand is in good hands with ADAC: the necessary know-how is available there in order to offer all motorsport fans a unique experience in the future. Thanks to the association's long experience, established structures and commitment to motorsport, ADAC is not only able to create the best possible synergies, but also to develop the DTM consistently. Thus, the best prerequisites are created so that we can continue to witness successful motorsport at the highest level for many years to come.."

At the moment, no one really knows what the future of the DTM will hold. It's hard to imagine the ADAC taking it back to continue to have two GT3 championships between its borders. Would a merger be possible? For the moment, the new buyers have not commented on the subject, perhaps because it is still too early. To be continued…
