McLaughlin wins at Sydney Supersprint

Supercars resumed behind closed doors at the Sydney Supersprint after a long break linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. Starting from pole, Scott McLaughlin (Ford) quickly built a lead over his pursuer Shane van Gisbergen (Holden).

The resident of Red Bull Holden Racing Team started on the front row and opted for a different strategy which complicated their race. The driver of the No. 97 Commodore slipped to 5th after pitting and had to fight his way through the field to get back into the race lead. His aggressive strategy almost paid off as the leader of DJR Team Penske had to defend his position to cross the finish line with less than 2 tenths of a lead.

“It’s a cockroach. We can never get rid of it. He's still around, joked the winner when talking about his main opponent. I knew I was going to be in trouble in the last stint. It was especially difficult during the last 5 laps, but I did the best I could. It was a magnificent race. »

Scott McLaughlin edged out a field of Holden drivers including Shane van Gisbergen, Jamie Whincup, Chaz Mostert and Nick Percat. The double reigning champion is 41 points ahead of Jamie Whincup while Shane van Gisbergen is in 8th place at 167 points. DJR Team Penske also leads the Teams championship ahead of Red Bull Holden Racing Team.

The Sydney Supersprint meeting will continue this Sunday with two 32-lap races.
