William Byron, who also won the race NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Thursday evening, is the first driver to win two events this season and leaves Martinsville with two beautiful clocks, the traditional winner's trophy. He won for the first time in the Cup Series at Martinsville and scored his fourth career victory.
If this eighth race of the season was not boring, it will not go down as the most exciting of the year either. The processions we witnessed in Richmond and Martinsville confirm that the Next Gen are wild animals hungry for wide open spaces and long straight lines. Byron led 212 of the 403 laps of the race while his teammate, Chase Elliott, led 185 laps. Do the sum, the calculation is simple and these figures alone sum up a Virginia event ultra dominated by the two men. Their team, Hendrick Motorsports, took the opportunity to pass the milestone of 10 laps driven on this Martinsville track, becoming the first Cup Series team to reach this prodigious number on a single track.

The safety car entered the track four times, twice to mark the end of the segments and later for Denny Hamlin's mechanical problems on lap 311 and Todd Gilliland's accident on lap 393 which led to an overtime finish. Joey Logano, who seemed the only one able to go after Byron, missed his restart and was unable to play for victory. He finished second ahead of Austin Dillon, Ryan Blaney and Ross Chastain who completed the top 5.
The Bristol race next Sunday will not be missed under any circumstances since it will take place... on dirt! The Bristol Dirt Race, a tribute to the young years of Nascar where the races took place on clay, had its grand premiere last season.
