Kimi Räikkönen returns in NASCAR, and this time on a track that he knows quite well.
Trackhouse Racing has announced that the world champion of Formula 1 2007, Kimi Räikkönen, will return to the NASCAR Cup Series on March 26 at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, behind the wheel of the PROJECT1 Chevrolet Camaro ZL91.
This race will mark Räikkönen's second participation following his debut with PROJECT91 at Watkins Glen on August 21, 2022. Unlike the Watkins Glen track, Räikkönen is no stranger to COTA, having raced there eight times during his Formula 1 career. Iceman scored the last of his 21 victories there on October 21, 2018 at the wheel of a Ferrari.
“I had a fantastic time in NASCAR, Raikkonen said. There was a lot to learn in a very short time, it was a big challenge! This time I'll be able to give my best more quickly on a track I know, so the learning curve won't be as steep. I want to have fun, but also do the best we can. »
The owner and founder of Trackhouse Racing, Justin Marks, created PROJECT91 last year with the aim of increasing the international dimension of the organization by offering entry in the Cup Series to renowned drivers outside the USA: “When we announced Kimi Räikkönen last year, I said he was the global superstar I had in mind when we created PROJECT91. I think you could appreciate the enthusiasm from the fans around the world and Kimi's performance in the car legitimized the concept. Kimi is huge and it's great for NASCAR and I think he really loves our sport. »
