Opel back in DTM in 2012?

Last August, during an interview given to the German magazine Motorsport Atuell, Adam Parr, the new boss of Williams Grand Prix Engineering Limited, had admitted to having had discussions with Opel with a view to a possible return to DTM. “Personally I would love it” he then declared. If the information were to be confirmed, the chosen model could be the Insigna.

A spokesperson for the German firm recently stated that the response should be given in the coming months.

Opel was present for many years in DTM, even triumphing in 1996 with Manuel Reuter in ITCC (name of the championship that year). But at the end of a complicated 2005 season, the brand decided to withdraw.

Already busy with the Formula 1 and the manufacture of single-seaters F2, Williams would then expand his activity even further. It should be noted that Sir Franck's firm has significant experience in touring cars, since it was responsible for the engagement of Renault Laguna between 1995 and 1999 in the very competitive BTCC championship, with a Drivers' title up for grabs in 1997 thanks to Alain Menu.

From two manufacturers in 2011, the DTM could increase to four in 2012. Let's admit that a field made up of Mercedes, Audi, BMW and Opel would look great.
