Scott McLaughlin on pole at night in Sydney

Contested at night on the Sydney Motorsport Park, a first on Australian soil in the series since 1997, the Supercars weekend event will see the two Ford Falcon FG Xs from DJR Team Penske of Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard set off from the first row of the starting grid.

Leader of the championship, McLaughlin dominated qualifying by finishing the session with a reference time established in 1'27″949, 107 thousandths ahead of his teammate Coulthard. The second row will consist of the Holden Commodore – Red Bull Holden Racing Team of Shane van Gisbergen and the Nissan Altima – Nissan Motorsport of Rick Kelly.

Note that van Gisbergen, like his teammates Jamie Whiincup and Craig Lowndes, who were unable to climb into the top 10 in free practice 2, had to compete in the first part of qualifying.

Whincup ultimately failed in 5th place in qualifying and will start alongside the Holden Commodore of Scott Pye (Walkinshaw Andretti United). Chaz Mostert (Ford Falcon – Tickford Racing), David Reynolds (Holden Commodore – Erebus), Craig Lowndes and Michael Caruso (Nissan Altima – Nissan Motorsport) complete the top 10 of the session.
