Scott McLaughlin comes from afar to win in C1 at Winton

The internal rivalry DJR Team Penske between Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard attracted attention this morning at Winton Motor Raceway in Supercars, but it was a Ford Mustang from the team of Roger Penske and Dick Johnson, that of Scott McLaughlin, which won in the end.

It was on the first lap that the action took shape very quickly, with Fabian Coulthard making the right move by taking a strong advantage at the first corner over pole sitter Chaz Mostert (Tickford Racing – Ford).

But a few turns later, while James Courtney (Walkinshaw Andretti – Holden Commodore) was in the lead, contact occurred between Coulthard and Scott McLaughlin, who had already moved up to second position.

The two Mustangs clad in their Shell livery set off into the grass. If McLaughlin manages to return to the track in third position, cutting a portion of the track, Coulthard is pushed far back in the peloton.

Worse for the latter, the race management imposed a 15″ penalty on him for the incident, a sanction to be observed during his pit stop.

McLaughlin charts his path

At the front, the fight rages between James Courtney and David Reynolds (Erebus Motorsport – Holden). A successful but virile overtaking attempt from Reynolds gave the Erebus driver the lead in the race, while Courtney fell back to fourth position.

Reynolds then takes McLaughlin and Mostert in his wake before being in turn penalized for contact with James Courtney. McLaughlin inherits the first position which the reigning champion will ardently defend until the finish despite constant pressure from Chaz Mostert.

The podium is completed by Reynolds ahead of Courtney and the two Holden Commodore – Red Bull Holden Racing by Shane van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup.
