If the 2019 title seems to have been promised to him for several weeks, Scott McLaughlin (DJR Team Penske – Ford Mustang) intends to complete a record year. The Kiwi driver, on his home ground of Pukekohe, offered himself before winning a potential crown, a 17th success this season, a new record.
The leader of the general classification, however, did not have control over the race, but took advantage of the penalty inflicted on Jamie Whincup (Red Bull Holden Racing – Holden Commodore), for overtaking the safety car that came into action on the 13th lap following David Reynolds stopping on track with an accelerator problem.
It is then that the Safety Car will then come out in front of Whincup, no longer being the leader of the event at this moment, hence the choice of the multiple Supercars champion to overtake the safety car, despite the yellow lights on the latter.
The order of the classification is thus upset, Scott McLaughlin taking the advantage on track after Whincup's penalty. No one will worry the DJR Team Penske driver anymore, who wins ahead of Shane van Gisbergen (Red Bull Holden Racing) and Chaz Mostert (Tickford Racing – Ford).
The Supercars championship will now turn to the Enduro Cup, with the three endurance races to come, including the legendary Bathurst 1000 which will open the sequence on October 15.
