From Queensland last year, Craig Lowndes (Red Bull Holden Racing Team – Holden Commodore) had no longer crossed the finish line in winning position.
The Supercars legend took the checkered flag first after the safety car came in just before the finish, following the accident involving Nick Percat (Brad Jones Racing – Holden), but suffered a penalty during the test of 15″ penalty for not having respected the regulations concerning pit entry (passage in the slow lane).
A sanction which therefore offers success to the Ford Falcon of DJR Team Penske of Fabian Coulthard, second in the initial order of finish, despite a puncture which caused him to lose control of the race shortly before the 20th lap to the benefit of his teammate and polesitter Scott McLaughlin.
Coulthard ultimately precedes Jamie Whincup (Red Bull Holden Racing Team – Holden), Garth Tander (GRM – Holden), Shane van Gisbergen (Red Bull Holden Racing Team – Holden) and Michael Caruso (Nissan Motorsport – Nissan Altima). Coulthard's DJR Team Penske teammate Scott McLaughlin takes 10th place
Craig Lowndes failed in 12th place after his penalty, ahead of Simona de Silverstro (Nissan Motorsport), who was also sanctioned like many competitors (Van Gisbergen, Wintterbottom (PRA – Ford)) for non-compliance with the pit entry procedure.
Note that, as in tests for Lowndes, Van Gisbergen or Coulthard, several drivers experienced punctures during the event with the new 2017 Dunlop tires, which started on the Phillip Island track.
