Supercars – Mostert and Owen win first race at Gold Coast

Chaz Mostert and Steve Owen (Ford) completed the first of two races at the Gold Coast meeting (Australia), the final round of the Supercars endurance season contested on a wet track. They are ahead of Cameron Waters and Richie Stanaway (Ford), authors of a comeback from 14th place on the grid. Tim Slade and Andre Heimgartner (Holden) complete the podium.

Starting from pole position, the Mostert-Owen duo experienced a race full of twists and turns. Their hopes seemed dashed when Paul Dumbrell's Holden plowed into the braking Ford. Both cars emerged miraculously intact. “Steve was hit, but we recovered until we were back in the lead; he really did a top class job”, enthuses Chaz Mostert, who signs his third victory of the year.

During more than two hours of effort, there was no shortage of incidents. The safety car intervened to clear a pile of tires obstructing the track. French Alexandre Premat (Ford) spun on the wet track, before his teammate Scott McLaughlin moved up to 12th place.

The prize for the astonishing incident goes to the Bathurst 1000 winners David Reynolds and Luke Youlden (Holden). Following a collision, the driver's door refused to open during the driver change. The mechanics had to remove the passenger door window to allow Luke Youlden to slip into the cockpit!

In the general classification, the positions are tightening. Current leader Fabian Coulthard suffered a penalty, sending him to 19th overall. Chaz Mostert returns to 121 points, but more worrying for the New Zealander, Jamie Whincup (Holden) and Scott McLaughlin are closing in on just 37 and 76 points before the last race of the weekend.
