Supercars – Whincup on provisional pole at Bathurst 1000

Jamie Whincup (Holden) took provisional pole at the end of the first qualifications for the Bathurst 1000km. The pilot of the Red Bull Racing Australia was a tenth ahead of Scott McLaughlin (Volvo) while Tim Slade (Holden) and Chaz Mostert (Ford) completed the leading quartet.

“I really enjoyed the session. A new set of tires on a competitive car on this track, it makes you come alive, commented the six-time champion. I thought we would go even faster, but the numbers don't mean anything, it's the position that counts. I am very happy to be on provisional pole but I now have to confirm during the shootout. »

Fabian Coulthard (Ford) took fifth place ahead of Shane van Gisbergen (Holden), Mark Winterbottom (Ford), Scott Pye (Ford), Garth Tander (Holden) and Michael Caruso (Nissan) who completed the top ten.

The final qualifying session will not see Craig Lowndes (Holden) fighting for pole. The last Bathurst 1000 winner only set the 21st time.

The session was interrupted several times following trips off the track. Simona de Silvestro (Nissan) will start from the back of the grid after finishing in the gravel trap.
