Whincup-Lowndes win at Sandown 500, McLaughlin wins

Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander (Red Bull Holden Racing – Holden Commodore) thought they had made one of the comebacks of the year from the back of the grid, after an accident during the second qualifying race of the Sandown 500.

On this final round of the 2019 Enduro Cup, the tandem returned to the front before overtaking their teammates and first leaders Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes. Victory seemed in the sights, but fate, or rather mechanics, would decide otherwise.

A suspension problem at the right rear slowed down the momentum of the No. 97 Commodore. van Gisbergen tried as best he could to continue, but finally had to stop 10 laps from the goal.

A heartbreaker which offers victory to Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes, their first success together in twelve years, and which concludes a perfect weekend for the tandem of the Commodore n°888, winner of the Enduro Cup. .

The other big winner of the day will remain Scott McLaughlin. The DJR Team Penske driver only finished 9th with his teammate Alexandre Prémat, but a result sufficient to secure a second crown in a row in Supercars.

The Kiwi and the Frenchman started from the back of the grid, following a penalty following the decisions of the panel of stewards on the #17 Ford Mustang engine affair at Bathurst.
