Charles Leong wins Macau Grand Prix qualifying race

This is the particularity of the Macau Grand Prix. Between qualifying on Friday and the Grand Prix on Sunday, a qualifying race is held on Saturday to determine the grid for the next day. Already winner of the Macau Grand Prix in car in 2020, the local of the stage Charles Leong indeed won the qualifying race of the day, with a cushion of five seconds over his runner-up from last year, the other Macanese Andy Chang.

As a reminder, due to the pandemic and administrative travel restrictions, the Macau Grand Prix is – temporarily – no longer the scene of the World Cup. Formula 3 for two years on the single-seater side. It is in fact the competitors lined up in Chinese F4 who are competing in the single-seater race of the weekend.

Chang, from last to second

Fastest in qualifying by almost a second, Charles Leong (Smart Life Racing) confirmed his superiority by dominating Andy Chang (Chengdu Team) and Sicheng Li (Blackjack Racing). The leading trio in qualifying will therefore be exactly the same on the starting grid for the Grand Prix on Sunday (8:30 a.m. French time).

However, everything was not easy for the three men, especially for Andy Chang. The Macanese actually started from last position after encountering a problem in the formation lap. But in eight laps, he managed to overtake the entire field to finally finish five seconds behind the poleman. His pace displayed during the warm-up suggests a great battle between the two men, far superior to the other competitors.
