FR 2.0 WEC: Vergne relaunches

Jean-Eric Vergne works on both counts. Second in the Eurocop Formula ranking Renault 2.0, the Frenchman is also in the runners-up chair in the West European Cup. Winner of the first three races (Nogaro, race 1 and 2, Barcelona, race 1) of the 2009 season in FR 2.0 WEC, Vergne was then dominated by his two main rivals, Nathanaël Berthon and Albert Costa. During the sixth round (races 11 and 12) of the season, in Valencia, the French champion got back on track by winning both events of the weekend.

During the first race of the weekend, Jean-Eric Vergne was able to take advantage of pole position, a place he had not held since Nogaro at the start of the season, to escape. After 26 minutes of racing, the Frenchman won ahead of Albert Costa and Nathanaël Berthon. The latter, with this result, took the necessary points to secure the title of French FFSA Formula Renault 2.0 champion. His performances during the French rounds allowed him to outdistance Vergne, who was too irregular, particularly in Pau.

But in Spain things are different. Already winner of a race in Barcelona, the native of Pontoise is uncompromising in Valencia. Author of a new pole on Sunday, the Frenchman escaped in the first laps of the race in order to lose his opponents. And, once again, he won, still ahead of Albert Costa. The weekend was perfect for Vergne, who had two poles, two victories and a fastest lap in the race. In the general classification, with two weekends of competition remaining, Jean-Eric Vergne is eleven points behind Albert Costa.

General classification : 1. Costa 139 pts? 2. Vergne 128 pts? 3. Berthon 112 pts? 4. Monras 92 pts? 5. Abelli 77 pts? 6. Munoz 56 pts? 7. Peak 47 pts? 8. Azzam 38 pts? 9. Lariche 30 pts? 10. Otegui 29 pts?
