FRECA – Mini wins chaotic Race 2 at Imola

Dispossessed of his first victory on Saturday after having received a ten-second penalty for a stolen start caused by a clutch problem, Gabriele Mini (ART Grand Prix) exorcised himself by offering himself his first success in FRECA at the end of Race 2. We often tend to say that starting from pole position is often a promise of victory in FRECA, but the Italian prodigy had anything but an easy race this time.

The start of the race, first of all, was given behind the safety car, due to a drying track on the Imola side. Dino Beganovic (Prema), the championship leader, took the opportunity to get the better of Tim Tramnitz (Trident), surprising second in qualifying, thanks in particular to push-to-pass, which clearly makes overtaking possible from now on. Then at mid-distance, the race was neutralized with the appearance of a red flag, due to a spectacular crash involving Sebastian Montoya. The Colombian was surprised by the miscue suffered by Pietro Delli Guanti after the Italian put a wheel in the grass just as it started to rain.

Spectacular crash for Montoya

This literally sent Juan Pablo's son flying over Delli Guanti, ending up in the gravel trap of the first turn. Fortunately, more fear than harm for Sebastian, who was able to get out of his car alone and without incident. The race was then restarted under safety car conditions, on a completely wet track on the first half of the track, while the second part was completely dry.

All the top 10 drivers returned to the track with wet tires for the final ten minutes of battle. Kas Haverkort (Van Amersfoort) was absolutely impressive in these mixed conditions, making a superb overtake on Michael Belov (MP Motorsport) to secure a place on the podium, before being disqualified. Hadrien David (R-ace GP) finished first French, while Macéo Capietto (Monolite) scored another point by managing to finish in 10th place. Stunned by his accident the day before, Sami Meguetounif (MP Motorsport) did not take part in the race at all.
