Now that’s what we call a hell of a comeback! Left since 14e position on the grid, Kas Haverkort (VAR) managed to fight his way through the peloton and resisted the changing conditions to come out on top in the Race 1 at Red Bull Ring.

After two laps behind the safety car and an interruption of around twenty minutes due to unpredictable weather, Paul Aron (Prema) was able to start Race 1 in wet conditions. On a drying track, some drivers like the poleman, Hadrien David (R-ace GP) or Sebastián Montoya (Prema) quickly opted for slick tires by passing through the pit lane while the rest of the peloton continued on their way at the image of Kas Haverkort.

A daring gamble which began to bear fruit a few minutes later with a logical improvement in times as the laps went by. It then seemed that victory would go to one of those who chose to stop. In the end, the story was quite different.

Taking the lead less than 10 minutes from the checkered flag, Pierre-Louis Chovet (RPM), who was competing in his first race in the championship, saw the safety car intervene on the track after the collision between teammates Paul Aron and Sebastián Montoya, which left the former on the floor. Still wearing its rain tires, the Habs were forced to restart the pack for the last two laps. Moment chosen by Kas Haverkort to go on the attack.

Part 14e, the Dutchman was back 2e after a series of overtakes and various stops. Unleashed, the VAR driver attacked Pierre-Louis Chovet when braking for turn 3, leaving him no chance. Leader of this Race 1, Kas Haverkort was not even going to need to defend his position against the Frenchman who subsequently lost to Joshua Dufek (VAR) and took the checkerboard in 3e position.

Championship leader, Dino Beganovic (Prema) extends his lead over Gabriele Mini (ART Grand Prix) and is now 47 points ahead of the Italian after his 4th place. Forced to abandon, Paul Aron remains 3e in the standings but 56 lengths behind his teammate.
