Oyu wins, the championship completely relaunched

What a weekend Super Formula had at Suzuka. After the very eventful Saturday race, this Sunday's race was just as eventful. Winner the day before, Naoki Yamamoto (Dandelion Racing) was forced to retire on the 5th lap.

While the peloton was driving behind the Safety Car after Sascha Fenestraz (Kondo Racing) went off the track, the 2020 Super GT champion encountered technical problems. Abandonment then became inevitable.

Up front, the restart is going well for pole sitter Nick Cassidy (Team Tom's). The New Zealander takes the lead again and creates a gap of almost two seconds with Toshiki Oyu (Nakajima Racing). While calmly leading the Sunday race, the Kiwi fell victim to the same fate as Naomi Yamamoto earlier. His engine failed and the 26-year-old driver was forced to retire.

Toshiki Oyu took the opportunity to take the lead and thus claim victory with less than half a second ahead of Nirei Fukuzumi (Dandelon Racing), his great rival of the day.

Starting 14th, Rio Hirakawa (Team Impul) managed to move up to 7th place. In this way, he remains at the top of the championship but is tied on points with Naomi Yamamoto. The two men have 55 points before the last round in Fuji (December 19/20). Enough to allow for a lively final weekend of racing.
