2023 marks the start of a new chapter for the two former Suzuki riders, Alex Rins and Joan Mir. Forced to bounce back following the surprise departure of Suzuki at the end of the 2022 season, the latter have in fact found refuge at Honda, Rins at LCR Honda Castrol, Mir within the prestigious Repsol Honda Team, as teammate of Marc Márquez.

The two men remain in the process of adapting since their departure from Suzuki, a period made difficult by the slight performance deficit that their machines seem to show compared to the competition at the end of the Sepang tests.

Furthermore, the Honda RCV is structurally a radically different machine from the Suzuki GSX-RR that they used to ride since 2019 for Mir and 2017 for Rins. The biggest change of course remains the V4 engine of the Hondas while the Suzukis had an in-line four-cylinder heart.

The 2020 World Champion, Joan Mir, seems to enjoy this challenge. “I’m happy with the progress we’ve made. I feel much more comfortable on the bike, explains the Majorcan. LThe riding style is totally different compared to the Suzuki, but it is not unpleasant. Somehow I'm still a rookie with this bike. » A great adaptation saluted by a 12th place at the end of the Sepang tests, less than a second from the reference established by Luca Marini aboard the Ducati of the Mooney VR46 Racing Team.

19e position more than a second from the leader for Alex Rins but a feeling quite similar to that of his compatriot. “I’m gradually getting used to this bike. I feel a slight improvement in the connection between the accelerator and the engine, he adds. But we still need to improve the bike. »

The progress of the two former Suzuki representatives will obviously be scrutinized during the next Test, March 11 in Portimão, track where the 2023 MotoGP season will kick off two weeks later.
