Leader of the general classification for 13 out of 14 special stages, Nikolay Gryazin left his opponents no chance. Spared by punctures (unlike many participants), he was only overtaken once by Erik Cais during SS5, before the latter plunged down the rankings due to a flat tire. The Russian achieved 4 scratches on 14 special stages, including a hat-trick in a row during the first three outings of the Rally.
Mads Ostberg's comeback
In tenth position when attacking SS5, Mads Ostberg made a spectacular comeback to climb to the second step of the podium. The Norwegian clawed back his deficit to start Sunday in third position. The puncture that occurred in SS 8 will not prevent the Citroën driver from remaining on the podium. At that moment, Andràs Hadik's second place was hanging by a thread, since the Hungarian only had a lead of 3 seconds over the Scandinavian. By setting the best time in SS5, Mads Ostberg will overtake him and never leave this position again overall. His scratch in the eleventh and thirteenth specials will give him a decisive lead. The other Hungarian driver, Norbert Herczig, 10nd this Sunday morning, suffered an accident during the first special of the day and retired.
Bonato 9th, the title for Mikkelsen
Weighed down by a puncture in SS2, Yoann Bonato fell too far behind to be able to play the leading roles in this Rally of Hungary. Sunday was nevertheless better for the Frenchman, author of the 2nd best time in SS8, and the 3rd fastest time during the following special and in SS13. He finished in 9th place. Andreas Mikkelsen, WRC2 champion last week, cannot do better than 7th place. The Scandinavian was unlucky this weekend with a puncture and a major engine problem. A sufficient position to win the title ERC, two rallies from the end.
