On paper, this very last stage of the championship ERC 2023 wasn't very spectacular. There were in fact only 4 special stages to compete and 59,29 km timed, but the progress of this short day was very hectic.
Amid numerous punctures on completely different terrain than the day before, the most notable incident was Miklos Csomos' violent accident while leading from SS2. By smashing his Fabia one time from the goal, the Hungarian opened the door for Mads Ostberg who had made up his mind. Author of a complicated year, the Norwegian saved his season with this success in his Citroën C3 Rally2. This is his 2e victory in the ERC and its 2e consecutive in this event after that of 2021.
Yoann Bonato can blame himself for his little improvised walk in the woods on Saturday afternoon, because without it he could have claimed 3e place in Hungary where he sometimes struggled to find the right rhythm. For Mathieu Franceschi, it wasn't just a question of speed. Victim of 4 punctures during the first stage, he had nothing more to hope for and he was content to accumulate the kilometers.
Le rally of Hungary also saw the epilogue of the ERC Junior championship. By winning his first victory in the category in 2023, Norbert Maior became champion. If he finds the additional budget, he should compete in JWRC next year in a Ford Fiesta Rally3.
