It's a small revolution that the world of rallies is about to experience! Like tennis or golf, the FIA has just announced the establishment of a points ranking, from 2022, for all drivers and co-drivers around the world, regardless of level. A pyramid scheme aimed at “strengthen ties within the community of rally ».

A coefficient system to establish a ranking

While the idea may seem surprising at first, the FIA has detailed its plan of attack to establish its world ranking. A coefficient system per championship will be put in place, which will also take into account the number of points acquired per round, as well as the number of participants in the event.

“The FIA World Rally Rankings will be a great opportunity to highlight the achievements of all eligible drivers and co-drivers, but also to showcase events on a global scale, explains Yves Matton, director of rallies for the Federation. The FIA has long had ambitions to create tangible links within the rally family at international, regional and national levels, especially considering that most cars are eligible at all levels, such as Rally 2 .”

“By launching the FIA World Rally Ranking, we are also strengthening the FIA Rally Sporting Pyramid and the FIA Rally Car Pyramid, which provide a clear ladder of progression from the bottom to the top of the sport. »

“The World Rally Rankings are powered by bespoke software which not only calculates results with absolute precision, but also ensures that the rankings are presented on time every week on a completely reliable and easy to understand platform. Support from the FIA Innovation Fund was essential to the realization of this project. »

This brand new hierarchical system will be published during the first quarter of 2022, and will be updated every Wednesday, at 18 p.m., on the FIA website, in particular for the so-called “world rally ranking”. The results entered in the international calendar as of October 15 will already be taken into account, from January 1 only for the national events. Like the ATP tennis rankings, these results will have a value for a period of 365 days, and only the 12 best results of a driver or co-pilot will award points.
