After a long crossing of the desert of 47 races without the slightest victory, Jeff Gordon found the path leading to the highest step of the podium by winning at the Speedway of Texas, one of only two tracks (with Miami Homestead) on which he has never won. An important victory therefore, in many respects, and especially its 82nd in the discipline. He is now on the heels of legends of the discipline such as Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip who precede him, grouped with 83 and 84 successes. Richard Petty (200 victories) and David Pearson (105) however seem untouchable. With this victory in Texas, Jeff Gordon strengthens his leadership position in the general classification where he is now ahead of his teammate Jimmie Johnson.
