Former Spanish pilot Juan Fernández i Garcia, better known as Juan Fernández, died at the age of 89 on the night of Sunday to Monday June 22. The native of Sabadell in Catalonia distinguished himself in the Hill Climb by winning the European Championship in the Sports Car class twice (1973, 1974), but also nine crowns at national level, a record.
The Catalan also crossed the Pyrenees to compete five times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1970 and 1981 on various cars like the Ferrari 512S, la Porsche 935 ou bien la Lola T600. C’est cependant au volant d’une Porsche 908/03 qu’il accomplit son meilleur résultat, une cinquième place en 1973 en compagnie de son compatriote Francisco Torredemer et du Français Bernard Chenevière pour le compte de l’Escuderia Montjuich.
