The first 45′ free practice session at Zandvoort was stopped with a red flag at 14:15 p.m., ten minutes before its end. Three mechanics of Ralf's car Schumacher were seriously injured and taken to hospital. It seems that the German driver's car left its pit prematurely, the three unfortunate participants being violently hit and thrown to the ground by the two air supply pipes attached to the gantry used for tire changes.
This first session was shortened and the second of 45′ could begin at 15 p.m.
