For this first qualifying session of this season, at Hockenheim, the drivers of the DTM had to battle with changing conditions. After the morning rain, the track gradually dried out as the cars passed, which trapped more than one actor in the series. In the end, it was Timo Scheider (Audi RS 5 DTM) who took the first pole position of the year. The double 2008 and 2009 champion beat Augusto Farfus (Bmw M4 DTM), the Brazilian, during Q3 and both Mercedes AMG C-Coupé by Christian Vietoris and Robert Wickens.

Note that many big contenders failed in Q2. Martin Tomczyk, the 2011 champion, Jamie Green, Audi's new British recruit, as well as the former driver of Formula 1 Timo Glock (BMW M3 DTM) failed to advance to the next level. Adrien Tambay, the only Frenchman in the discipline, also had to stop at this stage.
