Marco Wittmann (BMW) was the fastest in the field DTM during the first practice session at Hockenheim. The Championship leader set a time of 1'33''909, 27 thousandths ahead of Lucas Auer (Mercedes). Antonio Félix da Costa (BMW) and Christian Vietoris (Mercedes) followed less than a tenth of the benchmark.

Audi was slightly behind in this session since René Rast, the replacement for Mike Rockenfeller who supplants Mattias Ekström retained in World RX in Estering (Germany), who placed the first RS 5 DTM in fifth place by being the only driver of the manufacturer at the Rings in the top seven. Edoardo Mortara (Audi), Marco Wittmann's rival for the title, ranked 13th behind Adrien Tambay (Audi) more than half a second behind the German. Maxime Martin (BMW) finished 18th.
