For the second time this season, Lucas Auer (Mercedes) set the best time in this Saturday's qualifying session on the Nürburgring track. The Austrian driver achieved a best lap in 1'22"900, but will have to observe a penalty of five places on the grid (third warning received in Moscow) and will therefore start from sixth position.

The first row will therefore be made up of championship leader Marco Wittmann (BMW) and Tom Blomqvist (BMW). The first Audi RS 5 of Jamie Green follows in third position ahead of Edoardo Mortara (Audi) and Daniel Juncadella (Mercedes). Felix Rosenqvist (Mercedes) continues his promising start to the weekend and will start seventh ahead of Timo Glock (BMW). Bruno Spengler (BMW) and Paul di Resta (Mercedes) complete the top 10.

Robert Wickens (Mercedes), Wittmann's championship rival, was only able to set the 13th time. Adrien Tambay (Audi) will start from the last row alongside Augusto Farfus (BMW).
