Adrien Tambay was demoted to ninth place at the Norisring after receiving a half-minute penalty for his aggressive overtaking of Pascal Wehrlein. The pilot Mercedes thus inherits the top five ahead of Marco Wittmann (BMW), Joey Hand (BMW) and Mike Rockenfeller (Audi). The Frenchman was not the only one to be sanctioned since Martin Tomczyk (BMW) will have to move back three places on the Moscow grid for his contact with Gary Paffett (Mercedes). Antonio Félix da Costa (BMW) also received a 30-second penalty for failing to respect the yellow flags, but the Portuguese remains 20th.
