Truncated session at Hockenheim, for the last qualifying session of the season. Felipe Fraga, who had just set the best time of the session, had a big accident with his Ferrari AF Corse in the barriers at the exit of turn 1, prompting the marshals to display the red flag. With only two minutes remaining on the clock, the decision was made not to restart qualifying and the results were declared based on the order established before the intervention. It was René Rast who was credited with pole position for the season finale thanks to his time of 1'36″817.

The three points he thus scored allowed him to maintain a faint hope of leaving Audi as a four-time champion, especially since his main rivals Sheldon van der Linde and Lucas Auer had not yet completed a competitive lap. The championship leader finished only 6th, almost two seconds from pole position, while Saturday's race winner could only secure 11th place in one of his worst qualifying sessions of the season .

Sheldon Van der Linde enters the championship final with just two points ahead of Auer, while Rast is now 19 points behind him. Mirko Bortolotti took just one lap in qualifying and had just set the fastest time in the first sector when the red flag was shown, leaving him 18th on the grid and officially out of the title fight. Seven drivers did not take part in the final qualifying session of the season after a series of accidents during Saturday's race, leaving just 20 participants on the grid.
