Kimi Räikkönen comes out of retirement to freelance in Nascar

Kimi Räikkönen is back on the circuits. Retired after several poor seasons at Alfa Romeo, the world champion of Formula 1 in 2007 is still keeping an eye out for certain opportunities allowing him to show that he has lost none of his driving skills. And it is in Nascar, this summer, that the Finn will reconnect with the adrenaline of competition. Räikkönen (42 years old) will join Trackhouse Racing for the Watkins Glen round, in the Nascar Cup Series, on August 21. He will drive the No. 1 Chevrolet Camaro ZL91, with Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez as his new teammates.

Kimi Räikkönen is not a novice in Nascar. In 2011, during his sabbatical from F1, the Finn participated in a round of the Nationwide Series and another in the Truck Series with Kyle Busch Motorsports. Eleven years later, the ex-driver who raced for Sauber (2001), McLaren (2002-2006), Ferrari (2007-2009 and 2014-2018), Lotus (2012-2013) and Alfa Romeo (2019-2021) will return to the famous North American championship.

Räikkönen's freelance with Trackhouse Racing registers as part of Project91, which aims to extend the visibility of Nascar internationally by entrusting the No. 91 Camaro to foreign drivers. “ I had no intention of flying again, but Justin (Marks, owner of Trackhouse Racing. Editor’s note) came to see me at my home in Switzerland and convinced me how serious the program he was putting in place was, Räikkönen reacted. It's going to be fun, but I take it very seriously. I know how competitive the Nascar Cup Series is, and it will be a big challenge.«
