Edoardo Mortara (Mercedes) took pole for Race 1 of the DTM at the Norisring with a time of 47''843, ahead of Philipp Eng's BMW M4 DTM by only a thousandth. Marco Wittmann (BMW) followed 23 thousandths ahead of a group of Mercedes drivers made up of Gary Paffett, Paul di Resta, Daniel Juncadella and Lucas Auer. Timo Glock (BMW), the Championship leader, had to settle for eighth fastest time.
The Audis were once again behind since the first RS 5 DTM was only in tenth place with Nico Müller. Loïc duval took 15th position on the grid.
