Two French motorsport legends will return to action this weekend, raising the curtain of the DTM in Hockenheim. Laurent Aiello (2002 DTM champion and winner of 24 Hours of Le Mans 1998 in particular), as well as Eric Hélary (winner of the 24 1993 Hours of Le Mans and STW driver from 1998 to 2000), will effectively abandon their sporting retirement to join the circle of “star” drivers of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup, alongside Franck Biela and Manuel Reuter in particular.

“I remember good times spent here at Hockenheim,” recognizes Laurent Aiello, now 44 years old. This is where I won the DTM title in 2002. I am very happy to participate in this Scirocco R-Cup final. On the one hand, I will find my friend Éric Hélary on the track. On the other hand, I intend to prove to young people that I am still in the game,” says the Frenchman, not without humor.

For his part, Éric Hélary acknowledges “being happy at the idea of starting in such a competitive series, and especially with Volkswagen which has just won the world title in WRC with my compatriot Sébastien Ogier. I aim to win every race I take part in, even if it won't be easy.”

We will also note the racing debut of another legend, fallen from the sky, in the person of Felix Baumgartner, the Austrian holder of the record for free fall from the stratosphere.
