Spielberg – Q1: René Rast best time, Nick Cassidy on pole

If René Rast was the fastest at Spielberg, obtaining the best time in the last seconds of qualifying ahead of Nick Cassidy, it is the New Zealander who will start from pole in Race 1 after application of a penalty for the German.

A pole that will count as butter. If René Rast set the best time in Q1 on the Red Bull Ring ahead of Nick Cassidy, the German will only start from 4th place after application of his penalty received at Spa-Francorchamps. The commissioners had inflicted on the triple champion DTM a three-place grid penalty after contact between him and Cassidy during Sunday's race in Belgium.

The Audi driver from Team ABT was the fastest in 1'27"698 in Spielberg, just a tenth ahead of the New Zealander (+0"102). There Ferrari n°37, in colors Alpha Tauri, is inserted in the middle of 3 Audis, since Nico Müller (3rd, +0″261) and Ricardo Feller (4th, +0″320) complete the top 4.

A more complicated qualifying session, however, for the two leading men in the championship. If the runner-up, Lucas Auer, is doing not too badly with an 8th place (+0″541) on his Mercedes, leader Sheldon van der Linde will start only from 17th position (+0″794). A boon for René Rast but also for Mirko Bortolotti (6th, +0″360) who will aim to capitalize on their starting position to score big points on Saturday afternoon (start of Race 1 at 13:30 p.m.).
