Aligned with the Misano event (Italy) in DTM earlier in the season, as part of his preparation for the upcoming 24 Hours of Daytona (Florida) on a BMW M8 GTLM, Alex Zanardi took part last Saturday in the Emilia-Romagna Ironman in his native country.
The Transalpine thus completed the 3,8 km by swimming, followed by 180 km by Hand-Bike and 42,2 km by wheelchair in 8h26'06", a new world record in this exercise for a disabled athlete.
“The secret to success in an endurance triathlon is learning to distribute your energy, says Zanardi. Surrounded by nearly 3 other athletes, you must run your own race, focus on your own plan from start to finish and stick to every detail.
I also made some improvements to my equipment. I got a new swimsuit and it took less than an hour. 58 minutes was much better than I expected.
I developed a new seating position for my bike, designed purely for speed, and I also improved my wheelchair technique. All of this contributed to this success. But now I'm focusing on motor racing again. It is a great privilege in my life to be able to move back and forth between disciplines. »
