Mads Ostberg (Citroën) took the scratch in the 26,68km Sherwood, the longest special stage of the first stage of the Rally Australia. With a time of 12'49''0, the Norwegian was almost 6 seconds ahead of his teammate Craig Breen. Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) was the closest to the C3 WRC, preceding the Toyotas of Ott Tänak, Esapekka Lappi and Jari-Matti Latvala. The Estonian was close to being punished when he went into a ditch at the end of the special, which caused him a puncture. Elfyn Evans (M-Sport) followed more than 11 seconds ahead of teammate Teemu Suninen. Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) failed at 14 seconds, preceding Sébastien Ogier (M-Sport) by almost 4 seconds.
Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai) retired after leaving the road. The Norwegian could have been distracted by a tractor parked after a chicane.
Mads Ostberg takes the lead in Rally Australia with a 5s lead over Esapekka Lappi and 4s over Jari-Matti Latvala. Craig Breen climbs to 5th place ahead of Hayden Paddon and Ott Tänak. Teemu Suninen remains 8th ahead of Elfyn Evans. Thierry Neuville finds himself 4th with the retirement of Andreas Mikkelsen while Sébastien Ogier returns to the Top 7.
Ostberg finished almost 6s ahead of his teammate Breen! The Norwegian takes the lead in Rally Australia with a 5″ lead over Lappi. “I really enjoyed this SS even if it was difficult. It reminded me a bit of Finland. I am very satisfied with the car. »
Ostberg is flying through the debates with more than 5 seconds ahead of his teammate Breen, author of the provisional scratch.
Suninen settles for 7th fastest time, more than 6s behind the benchmark. Evans is only one second behind his teammate in the general classification.
Paddon beats Tänak by 2 tenths but lost by 7 tenths to Breen. “There is still a long way to go but it is regrettable for Andreas. »

Hyundai has confirmed Mikkelsen's retirement following his exit.

Paddon is faster than Tänak in the first split with a second ahead of the Estonian.
Mikkelsen and his co-driver Anders Jaeger inspect the Hyundai's engine, which appears to have suffered damage when it went off the road.

Mikkelsen is slow in the special. The Hyundai driver went off the road after a high-speed spin. The i20 WRC appears to be badly damaged after going into the ditch. The Norwegian was 9th.
Lappi fails one second behind his teammate Tänak and maintains a little more than 2 seconds ahead of the Estonian in the general classification. “There are such fast passages in the special, it’s incredible. »

Despite his error, Tänak improved Neuville's time by 7″2, relegating Ogier to 11s. The Frenchman is 20 seconds behind the Estonian in the general classification. The Toyota driver got out of his Yaris WRC to examine the damage to his car, which suffered a rear-left puncture after going off the road.
