For the first time in the history ofIMSA, an electric vehicle will be used as a Safety Car during the Michelin GT Challenge, at 18 p.m. this Saturday on the VIRaceway. A Porsche Taycan Turbo S will thus lead the GT peloton Le Mans (GTLM) and GT Daytona (GTD) to the green flag for the start of the 2h40 race, the penultimate round of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. “IMSA is proud to join our partners at Porsche in having the Taycan Turbo S as the Safety Car for the WeatherTech Championship this weekend,” said IMSA President John Doonan. “This is an incredible car that fits perfectly with the IMSA Green initiative that our organization has endorsed and continues to emphasize. As we saw with the sensational response to the LMDh hybrid class prototype debuting in 2023, as well as the ETCR car demonstration earlier this year, IMSA is focusing on new and cleaner technologies for the future. Having the Porsche Taycan Turbo S as a safety car at VIR will show the potential to leverage these technologies in areas we have never experienced before. »
