Frédéric Lequien: “Endurance is coming back to the forefront, it’s a new golden age”

There are encounters that mark a life. For Frédéric Lequien, the one with Axel Dolhem, son of former Formula 1 driver José Dolhem, is one of them. The boss of the World Endurance Championship revealed himself during a stroll along the Marne, at the wheel of the Dino 246 GT which marked their adolescence.

Frédéric, how are you a few weeks before the start of this new season of the World Championship?Endurance ?

Very well thank you. We are a few days away from the first round (the 1000 Miles of Sebring, March 18. Editor's note) with an exceptional grid, a record number of thirty-nine entrants and a very strong field in all categories. We are on a good dynamic ahead of a 2023 season which promises to be without equivalent in the history of the World Championship, and perhaps also in the history of motorsport with no less than seven manufacturers who will commit to the premier category in Hypercar (Toyota, Peugeot , Glickenhaus, Ferrari, Porsche, Audi, Cadillac. Editor’s note). Endurance is coming back to the forefront, it’s a new golden age! So yes, I am doing very well, but I am also aware of the magnitude of the task.

Why did you choose this car for this carpooling ?

For me, it's much more than a car. When I saw her for the first time, I was less than twenty years old. Its owner, Axel (Dolhem. Editor's note), is one of my best friends, we grew up together in the same group of friends. This Dino has quite an incredible history since it was one of the vehicles in the collection of Didier Pironi and José Dolhem. I feel like I grew up with this car. She was never far away, in a garage here or elsewhere and, systematically, there was always one in the group to ask Axel: “So, are you taking the Dino out?” » (Rires) .
