The suspense had not been one for a long time as the presence of Fernando Alonso on the next Dakar in Saudi Arabia (January 5-17) was recorded unofficially.
This Thursday, on the sidelines of Rally of Catalonia, where the Toyota Gazoo Racing can hope to see Ott Tänak crowned for the first time, the Japanese brand officially endorsed the debut of the double world champion F1 on the legendary rally-raid in 2020.
Alonso has been testing the Hilux developed by Overdrive for several weeks, whether in private sessions or in competition in South Africa or at the last Rally of Morocco, and will launch into the deep end of the Dakar with his co-pilot Marc Coma.
A new challenge for the Spaniard, world champion WEC in title and winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018 with Toyota, and further seeks to conquer the Indianapolis 500 to achieve his goal of the Triple Crown.
Alonso and Coma will be entered in a Toyota armada made up of outgoing winner Nasser Al-Attiyah, supported by Mathieu Baumel, Giniel de Villiers and Bernhard Ten Brinke. More information to follow.
