The FIA Intercontinental Drifting Cup moves to Riga

The discipline made its appearance during the FIA Motorsport Games in Vallelunga at the end of 2019, a sign that the International Automobile Federation was finally taking drifting seriously. This March 8, a new milestone is reached with the creation of the 2021 FIA Intercontinental Drifting Cup.

The competition was born thanks to a call for tenders won by Russian Drift Series (RDS) LLC for a period of three years (2021 to 2023). The international meeting will be held this year in Riga, at the Biķernieki Sport Complex in Latvia, from June 11 to 13, 2021.

“We are confident in RDS’s ability to elevate this event to the rank of the premier global drifting competition, explains Akira Iida, President of the FIA Drifting Commission. Riga is an excellent choice to start this adventure and the organizing team has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to offer some of the best Drifting events in the world. »

The Russian Drift Series Grand Prix has become over the years one of the main drift championships in the world, behind the number 1 country in this sliding sport, Japan. But the attraction for this discipline is only growing, as confirmed by Dmitry Dobrovolskiy, CEO of RDS. “Recently, we have seen a growing interest in Drifting in the United States, Europe, Japan and Russia. One of our priorities for the next three years is to use the FIA IDC to disseminate this sport even more widely and conquer new markets. »
