Loeb fights back, Peterhansel unscrews, Al-Attiyah ensures

There was no need to upset them! Victims of a power outage Monday January 14 on the Dakar 2019, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena (Peugeot ) won the eighth stage, contested Tuesday January 15 between San Juan de Marcona and Pisco (Peru). And with the manner: the PH Sport crew is 7'27'' ahead of Nasser Al-Attiyah (Toyota) et 15’15’’ sur Nani Roma (Mini) !

The Franco-Monegasque duo has won half of the stages contested in Peru so far (4 out of 8). This allows them to get back on the podium in the general classification, a handful of seconds behind second place for the discreet but efficient Nani Roma.

The big loser of this day is still Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini). The record holder for victories on the Dakar was twice stuck in the sand. “We got stuck in the sand twice again. This morning in the first dunes we had caught up with all the motorbikes and then we made the track.

In all, we have two siltations which are costing us dearly. We are still generally helped by the motorcycle tracks, and when they are not there it is more complicated. » In general, Stéphane Peterhansel was dropped 53'30'' behind the leader.

The leader is precisely the most serene man in the bivouac. Nasser Al-Attiyah, accompanied by his co-driver Mathieu Baumel, further increased their lead over their closest rival (Nani Roma) thanks to a second best time. They have three quarters of an hour on Nani Roma and Sébastien Loeb before the last two stages.

“We attacked well, Nasser Al-Attiyah justifies himself. It was good to leave 30 minutes later than Stéphane, but we didn't know how fast he was going to go. We are quite surprised to see the gaps at the finish, with Stéphane as well as with Nani.

We just had a puncture today, but we never stopped, keeping a good pace. Now we have two days left of Dakar, there is reason to be happy. But we work day after day. I know Stéphane is behind it, we will be able to manage. »

The other leaders of the rally-raid experienced many problems. Cyril Despres (Mini), transparent this year, lost an hour in the desert, just like his teammate Carlos Sainz and the Dutchman Bernhard ten Brinke (Toyota).
