Highly anticipated and delayed by a year due to the health crisis, the electric revolution will make its grand appearance in 2022. For the first season of this new era, 14 kits, developed and produced by the Austrian structure Kreisel Electric, have already been “reserved” by existing teams but also new ones, whose identities will be revealed in due course, the FIA said. A figure which could increase by the first round. “We are in positive discussions with a number of manufacturers, who share our vision and our commitment in the environmental, economic and social fields”, adds Arne Dirks, executive director of World RX

Although different, the cars will feature the same powertrain, namely that of Kreisel. This first campaign of World RX version 2.0 should therefore finally allow the policeman of world motorsport “to electrify the championship” and thus pass it into a “ new era ».

“It is nice to see our vision for the electrification of the FIA World Championship Rallycross materialize with the confirmation of a field of 14 entered for the inaugural season, explains Jean Todt, excited at the idea of this new version. Electric mobility is growing in importance and World RX is the ideal stage to showcase the performance capabilities of electric road cars in an FIA World Championship environment.”

For the moment, the format of the races is not yet known. It is still under study in collaboration with the FIA, the World RX teams, the organizers and the World RX promoter, WRC Promoter. The main aim of the changes that will be made is to create more overtaking opportunities but also closer races.
