Born September 30, 1941 in Motala (Sweden), Reine was the son of a radio-TV technician. In parallel with his automotive engineering studies, he practiced football, swimming and motocross before starting in 1962 on a Mini Cooper, alternating races on circuit and on ice. Two years later, he left the garage he managed in his hometown for a job with the importer BMC. During the week, he tested the cars off the line and, at the weekend, he raced in a Ford Anglia, replaced in 1965 by an MG Midget with a Formula Junior 1100 engine.
