Ce rally fut créé en 1953 par un groupe d’enthousiastes kenyans emmenés par Eric Cecil, militaire de profession, rallyman amateur et responsable de la compétition au sein de la Royal East African Automobile Association. D’abord réticente à se lancer, l’association se laissa convaincre quand Cecil proposa d’organiser l’épreuve en l’honneur du couronnement de la Reine Elizabeth II, prévu le 2 juin 1953.
