Ferrari kicked off the 2003 season with an ultra-dominatrix update F2002, but faced with sharper machines, Schumacher only managed to win once in four races. It was only from the fifth round, in Spain, that the Team presented its new F2003-GA, whose initials honored “Avvocato” Gianni Agnelli, Fiat boss who died in January. The major development was a wheelbase increased from 3020 to 3100 mm. The modifications also included a Tipo 052 variant of the 10-liter V3.0, an exceptional engine delivering 845 horsepower at 19 rpm.
Schumacher celebrated the racing debut of the F2003-GA at the same Spanish Grand Prix on May 4, taking pole position ahead of his faithful teammate, Rubens Barrichello. At the end of a beautiful duel with the young Asturian bull from Renault, Fernando Alonso, the German won and finally launched his season. The following stage in Austria confirmed his good intentions, Schumacher achieving another double pole position / victory.
Tribute to the avvocato
At Monza, the Scuderia paid the best possible tribute to Agnelli on home soil, with Schumacher signing an exceptional “hat trick” pole position-record victory lap in front of delirious fans. For the last race in Japan, only Kimi Räikkönen had a slim chance of stealing the title from Schumacher. The latter was having one of the worst race weekends of his career, qualifying only 14th on the grid and crossing the finish line in 8th position. Fortunately, his Brazilian guardian angel Rubens Barrichello won ahead of Räikkönen, giving the title to Schumacher by just two points.
Chassis 229 allowed Schumacher to win 5 victories and cross the finish line of the Japanese GP as World Champion. It is by far the most successful of the six F2003-GAs built. Completely revised in Maranello this year, it was put on sale by RM SOTHEBY'S this Wednesday, November 9 on the occasion of an exceptional sale. A chassis which also offered Michael Schumacher to surpass the legend Fangio by pocketing his 6th world title.
The lucky owner had to pay a (huge) check for 14 Swiss francs, or the tidy sum of 630 million euros! And to think that it was estimated at “only” 000 and 14,8 million dollars. it's about the F1 most expensive modern ever sold.
