On January 24, 1986, Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto won the Monte-Carlo ahead of Timo Salonen. This will be the last success of the future rally star before his disappearance at the Tour de Corse a few months later.

Little Henri became big. His hip hurt, but he walked straight. His Lancia was twisted, but it held up. Together, they took up the gauntlet, while Salonen and Peugeot threw in the towel.

Was there ever any doubt about that? The World Championship of rallies 1986 will keep all its promises. The first round - and the most famous - allowed us to experience from start to finish a fight at the highest level between the two great favorites of the 1986 season, Peugeot and Lancia, followed a short distance by Audi.

In pure performance, the Italian and French machines appeared close to each other. The 205 Turbo 16 retains, in our opinion, a slight advantage in handling
