In spring 1969, Porsche et John Wyer ont uni leurs destinées pour les deux saisons suivantes, mais Jacky Ickx ne pilotera pas les 917 aux couleurs Gulf. Son choix de retourner chez Ferrari in 1970 forced him to leave the British team and remain in the role of n°1 opponent to Porsche. Still living in his priory near Brussels, he contented himself with developing the F1, leaving his teammates to take care of the 512 S. At his request, the Belgian has as a teammate the Swiss Peter Schetty, a pilot “ calm and conscientious » (dixit Jacky), European Mountain Champion on Ferrari. Seeing its development disrupted by the vagaries of the sky, the 512 S was not as accomplished as the Porsche 917 K when it debuted at the 24 Hours of Daytona. While sporting director Franco Gozzi plays the telephone operator with the Commendatore, Mauro Forghieri directs the maneuver, assisted by engineers Giacomo Caliri (chassis, aerodynamics) and Giancarlo Bussi (engines). Heavier and less agile than the Porsche, the Ferrari is nonetheless more powerful, which will allow it to do well for its debut. Sent into the wall by a Camaro, Ickx had to retire, but was called upon to reinforce the other crew made up of Mario Andretti and Arturo Merzario. The trio finished in 3rd place behind the two Por
