Two decades ago, perfidious Albion was seen as "the" homeland of the discipline. Like France in the 1960s with the duel between Raymond Poulidor and Jacques Anquetil in cycling, our neighbours across the Channel had the luxury of choosing their side. Fans of the show leaned towards Colin McRae, the Scot with the big heart.
