Esports – What equipment to get started? 3/4

There are different types of steering wheels, pedals, gearboxes, handbrakes, chassis, button boxes, etc. Small presentation by budget and by type of player (from beginner to pro), without forgetting the notion of size as well as the sites where you can find what you're looking for. Episode 3, choices for budgets close to the high end.

Esports – What equipment to get started? 3/4

This time we're getting down to business with more efficient steering wheels and pedals. We will not go into too technical details here, but know that the main difference compared to the previously mentioned steering wheels is the feeling on the track. They use different (or more advanced) technologies for more immersion and have superior manufacturing quality. Be careful, they won't make you go faster! Chassis side, those of the config. 2 will be perfect to accommodate the ruffles below.

Part 1: Low budget

Part 2: Average budget

Part 3: High Budget

Part 4: XXL budget

flying

Thrustmaster T-GT. approx. 800€ (PC, PS4)

The special thing about this steering wheel is that it was specially developed for the GT Sport game. If you only play GT, this is the absolute weapon. It is also used by simracers during Gran Turismo Esport competitions. Its weak point is its pedal board which is unfortunately not up to par. However, it is possible to change it for the T-LCM, the brand's latest addition with “load cell” technology (€200).

Most :

Exceptional on GT Sport

Number of buttons on the wheel

Accepts all wheels and cranksets in the range

Cons:

The pedal board

Wheel a little small

Where to buy it: thrustmaster.com, Fnac, Micromania, certain supermarkets

The alternative

ClubSport V2.5 BMW GT2. approx. 850€ without pedalboard (PC)

For this type of steering wheel, you should not think Wheel Base, wheel, crankset together. We must separate the three elements. It's then up to you to choose from the wheels offered by the manufacturer and the different cranksets. So here we have the base CSW 2.5 with a 2cm BMW GT32 wheel. So for this set, it's one of the best steering wheels in its class.

The driving sensations are excellent, it benefits, just like the CSL Elite, from all the presets on the steering wheel, but it has a particularity: it is equipped with the “quick release” system which means that you can change wheels to put them on. another (a steering wheel F1 for example) on the fly. When you see F1 drivers take their steering wheel off and put it back on, it's the same here!

We chose the model with a BMW GT2 wheel (the finish of which is exemplary), but all the other wheels from the manufacturer fit. On the other hand, it is only PC compatible with the BMW wheel. The steering wheel base is compatible with PC and Xbox One.

Most :

An excellent feeling

Quick release system

Accepts all brand wheels and cranksets

The best non-Direct Drive steering wheel (see configuration 4)

Cons:

Avoid attaching it to a desk!

Where to buy it: Only on the site fanatec.com

Frame

ClubSport pedals V3 approx. 360€ (PC, PS4, One depending on the base)

This is a crankset equipped with Load Cell technology. To make it short, on a crankset, the most important thing is the brake. A brake that wants to be realistic must be able to withstand a lot of pressure (60 to 100 kg). It is this pressure that will be calculated. On all the cranksets we have presented to you, the brake pedal is very flexible and the pressure very low. Here, it's the opposite, to stick as closely as possible to reality.

You can also adjust the brake travel and change the rubbers so that the pedal is more or less hard. Except for Thrustmaster's T-LCM, also equipped with Load Cell technology (but we haven't tested it), it's the ultimate in consumer cranksets. Be careful, however, to secure it properly, if you put it hastily on the ground, disaster is guaranteed!

Most :

Finally a real pedal board!

Load Cell Technology

A remarkable finish

Compatible with all brand bases

Cons:

You need a chassis to use it or be resourceful!

Where to buy it: Only on the site fanatec.com

The alternative

TS-PC RACER approx. 550 € (PC)

The TS-PC racer is a PC-only steering wheel. During our test, we found it very pleasant and very precise. It is a competitor to Fanatec's ClubSport V 2.5. On the other hand, and even if the quality is there, it is less well finished than its direct competitor. In any case, it's already very good material to really have fun. It obviously benefits from the entire Thrustmaster ecosystem.

Most :

Can be attached to a desk

Value for money

Accepts all wheels and cranksets in the range

Cons:

No quick release system

Where to buy it: thrustmaster.com, Fnac, Micromania, certain supermarkets
