F1 launches Virtual Grand Prix Series to replace postponed races

How to pass the time when motorsport is at a standstill? Turn on your game console, of course! Simracing and Esport have been on the rise for several years, but are benefiting from a huge spotlight with the confinement linked to Covid-19.

La Formula 1 steps into the breach, announcing the launch of the Virtual Grand Prix Series on Sunday March 22. The objective is to “allow fans to continue watching F1 events”, even if they take place on the F1 2019 video game.

The first round is scheduled for the Sakhir circuit (Bahrain). All the Grands Prix postponed due to coronavirus (Bahrain, Spain, Monaco, Australia probably) will be played, with the idea of running this championship until May.

The tracks of Zandvoort (Netherlands) and Hanoi (Vietnam), not modeled by the game from the English studio Codemasters (which is based on the 2019 season), will be replaced by alternative events.

The Virtual Grand Prix Series will see real Formula 1 drivers battle it out with “stars” online. The first round will take place in a qualifying format + 28 laps of racing (50% of the actual distance) and will be broadcast on the F1 channels on YouTube, Facebook and Twitch.

In order to guarantee close and interesting battles, the single-seaters will have the same level of performance. Damage will be reduced and gamers will even be able to use traction control and anti-lock brakes.

“With the majority of sports championships unable to take place in the real world, the time has come to highlight the benefits of Esports and the incredible talents that take part in this show,” explains Julian Tan, Director of Digital Initiatives and Marketing. Esports for F1. »
